June 11-13, 2010 at Meadow Brook Farms and Preserve, North Bend, Washington

If you attended Lionhearts, please fill out an After Event Report -- we appreciate your feedback!

Activities and Schedule

Lionheart's is well-known for having lots to do and being a great first event. We are low key with activities geared to all levels.

There will be a wide variety of equestrian activities for all skill levels, with a chance to practice and compete in each one. Equipment will be set up for the whole weekend so it will be possible to school and practice throughout the event.

For those wishing to hone their competitive skills, each individual contest will provide an opportunity to amass points for an overall weekend prize. Activities will include:

  • Challenge Course
  • Mounted Archery
  • Jousting
  • Carousel (riding to music)
  • Persona Challenge
  • Military Drills
  • Trail Challenge (competitive mounted scavenger hunt)

Riders may participate in any combination of these activities even if they don't wish to be competitive in them. There are also trailheads for riding trails on the site, in beautiful North Bend, WA.

Activity Detail - Carousel Challenge

To encourage the skills of performance and equitation, you are encouraged to ride your horse to music at Lionhearts. Bring your music in the form of a CD or iPod, or your live musicians. Extra points will be awarded for documenting the music as period, outstanding costume, synchronization with the music, and entertaining showmanship.

Activity Detail - Joust Challenge

To encourage the skills and pageantry of jousting, you are encouraged to prepare your horse and your kit for jousting at Lionhearts. Please authorize for jousting before the event to participate in this challenge. Extra points will be awarded for heraldic pageantry, chivalrous behavior, impressive strikes, and impressing Their Excellencies of Madrone.

Activity Detail - Persona Challenge

To encourage the research and recreation of the equestrian arts and skills of medieval Europe, you are encouraged to prepare yourself and your horse for a Persona Challenge at Lionhearts. Participants will gain points for demonstrating period-appropriate equipment and sensibilities throughout the weekend, including clothing, tack, barding, grooming equipment, and camp equipment, and for purporting themselves around the horses appropriately to their personas. Participants are not expected to change their manner of speech, but rather to adhere to period-appropriate topics. Extra points will be awarded for documenting equestrian items as period-appropriate.

Activity Detail - Mounted Archery Challenge

To encourage the art of mounted archery, you are encouraged to prepare your horse and your bow for a Mounted Archery Challenge at Lionhearts. Participants will be provided with a riddle at the beginning of the run, and points will be gained by solving the riddle to determine the correct target, shooting at the corresponding targets, and accurately hitting those targets. Extra points will be awarded for showmanship and outstanding costume.

Activity Detail - Military Drill Challenge

To encourage the art and knowledge of the application of period cavalry, you are encouraged to prepare yourself and your mount for a Military Drill Challenge at Lionhearts. Participants will gain points for accurate responsiveness to cavalry commands and cavalry-appropriate tack and costume. Extra points will be awarded for appropriate cavalry ensemble, for impressing the drill master, and for accurate participation in the closing charge.

Activity Detail - Trail Challenge

To encourage forays beyond the boundaries of the equestrian area, you and your horse are encouraged to participate in the Trail Challenge at Lionhearts. Riders, either solo or in pairs, will gain points for finding items from a supplied list, and speed of challenge completion. Extra points will be awarded for creative interpretation and overall panache.

Activity Detail - Challenge Course "Grimm's Fairy Tales Gone Wrong"

To encourage prowess at martial gaming, you and your horse are encouraged to participate in the "Grimm's Fairy Tales Gone Wrong" Challenge course at Lionhearts. Participants will gain points for completing fairy-tale themed versions of common martial games, such as pigs, reed, heads, quintain, rings, and fruit transport. Extra points for impressive displays of skill and splendor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the water situation?
A. The site has no water for people. We are bringing in water for horses, which is why pre-registration is required. We are calculating about 15-20 gallons of water per horse per day. If your horse normally needs more or for washing, please supplement our supply with your own. REPEAT there is NO PEOPLE WATER.

Q. What is the paddock situation?
A. Due to two fairly busy roads (Boalch and HWY 202) flanking the site with no existing fencing, hedges, barrier, or distance, we are creating an "Uber-paddock" of hot tape and capped T-posts as a secondary line of defense at night. Your individual paddocks (which you provide) will go inside that. The only exception will be pipe paddocks, which can go outside if you wish. There must be an adult responsible for each horse in the equestrian area at night. This is a freshly mowed field. Each owner is responsible for checking their area for noxious weeds. We'll check too, but better safe than sorry. There is no shade at this site.

Q. When can I arrive?
A. The EqMIC will be on site by 10AM on Friday. Early arrivals may begin at 10am; be prepared to set up your paddock quickly and then help with Equestrian Area set-up. Bring water for your horse, as the site water will arrive at 3pm. General arrivals begin at 3pm Friday.

Directions

Important: This is an alternate route. There may not be SCA signs until the site entrance.

From I-90 Eastbound:
Take Exit 27 (Snoqualmie/Snoqualmie Falls)
At the freeway off-ramp stop sign go left (under the freeway), and continue east down the hill on North Bend Way
Take the Snoqualmie-Snoqualmie Falls left-turn lane, following signs to Snoqualmie Falls, and turn left onto Meadowbrook Way
Continue downhill past the Snoqualmie Hospital entrance and through the woods
**Note, this is a steep road and has a bend in it. I've driven it twice, it's okay, just slow down a bit.
At the traffic light at SR 202 (Milk Barn on left) continue straight; you will pass Mount Si High School on your left
At the stop sign, turn right onto Park Street. Continue east on Park, past Snoqualmie Elementary School and Centennial Fields Park on your right
Horse trailers will enter through main gate.
Someone will direct you where to park. The plan is to go to the end of the row and park facing the RV road. See the site map for clarification. We have enough parking for trailers and tow vehicles only. Non-equestrian parking is beyond the RVs, not far away.

See park link for alternate directions, including off HWY 202
