Lance Technique - Vertical

Correct vertical lance technique

Begin the pass with your lance raised. About four strides from your target, let the tip glide down gradually, so that it reaches the height of your target just in time to make the strike. Once the strike is made, raise your lance again

Incorrect vertical lance technique

If you lower the lance too quickly, or start with the lance lowered, you will find that the motion of the horse causes the lance to wobble which makes proper targeting quite difficult

You will find that lowering the lance just before the strike provides better lance control with less effort.

A note about the animation above

In order to cleanly illustrate the lance angles in the animation above, the jousters hands are further in front of the torso than they need to be.

You will need the Flash player to see the animation.
